Why "Curious About Math"? Because I believe that it is a curiousity about things in life that help us to want to learn and understand. And because I want to share my passion for math with others.
Math can be a wonderful thing to explore, to play with, to have fun with. Math is also an amazingly useful tool. And it is everywhere in our world and our lives. When I share something "mathy" it may be something worth observing, like the symmetry of object in nature; it may be something to play with like Spirograph; or something interesting to learn, like why Roman Numerals use a "V" for 5 and an "X" for 10; or something to use, like calculating where your tree will fall if you cut it down; it may be something to appreciate, like the amazing snow art of Simon Beck; or it may even be something worth taking the time to understand such as using fractions can help us when following cooking recipes.
I think of myself as a "Math Person". I studied Mathematics in University many years ago. I did not end up having a career in the field of Mathematics, but I never lost my passion for math. I play with math, I continue to learn math, I tutor students in math. I love to teach math, to make it understandable, to help students build connections, to watch them when they have a light bulb moment. For a long time I toyed with the idea of writing about math - in the hopes of encouraging interest in math, increasing understanding of math, and building an understanding of the importance of math and the prevalence of math in our world - for anyone, but especially for students and their parents. This is the start of that writing. I hope it stimulates curiosity about math!
